Monday we joined a guided food & architecture-walk. Very interesting, and tasty too. Believe it or not, I drunk coffee, and liked it! Cuban cafe con leche.
In the evening it was time for another good restaurant, Ola, where we I had delicious meatballs made of kobe beef, then slow-cooked pork with beans in a kind of Cuban way. Very good.

Back again in freezing Malmö, Sweden. Brrr. But still very nice to be home again. Realized I never posted photos from the last few days in Miami. So here goes.

These are from Sunday. Took a walk along the beach and down to Ocean Drive in the very warm weather. Then had dinner at The Dining Room (the halibut and the filet mignon churrasco were really good).

On the way home I couldn't help but stop by the Deuce for a few beers. No matter what people say about this place (and the say a lot), it's a favourite of mine.

An arty day

Started with a walk along the beach. Followed up by borrowing a bike at the hotel to do the art museums in the Wynwood districts. The concierge said it was far too far to bike, but hey, he is American. Ended up doing more than 20 km but had a great time.

Then had a fab dinner at Meet Market. Coming back to the hotel for a quiet evening (being ridiculously full after all that meat) there was a burlesque show on. Couldn't even pass. So had to sit down with a mojito.

Hamnade i South Beach Miami med jobbet. Glitter, silikon, botox, platinakort. Hmm. Det måste finnas mer. Tog en nattlig promenad med väderkornet påslaget. Snackade med gatumusiker, poliser, fyllon, dörrvakter.

Klev till sist in på Club Deuce Bar, 14th Street, och kände omedelbart mig som hemma.
Kunde lustigt nog hälsa på några som jag plåtat på gatan tidigare.
Laura the bartender dyker upp bakom disken klädd i keps och dubbla tank tops, en vit och en svart. "What can I get you honey?"
Sitter nu vid den M-formade baren med en Yengling lager. Någon har satt på Tina Turner i jukeboxen och en storbystad brunett i tight rött fodral lyfter cash i automaten sidan om muggen. Biljardbordet rasslar till när någon trycker i en dollar för ett spel.
Slår mig i slang med Marianne från Connecticut som hälsar på sin bror i Miami. Vi pratar snowboarding, barn, alkoholpolitik och religion. En trevlig tjej. Snart dyker hennes pojkvän, bror och hans flickvän upp också. När de går börjar Laura bartender prata lite, är nyfiken på var jag är ifrån. De flesta hälsar familjärt på personalen, förhör sig om personliga detaljer, visar upp bilder på sin sistfödda.
Det här stället känns bra, tror jag stannar ett tag.

Today it rained - in Florida! Well, it didn't stop me from going kayaking in the swamps of Everglades. Very beautiful with lots of birdlife, a few alligators and interesting flora (including orchids). Unfortunately the rain didn't stop the mosquitos either, so now I donated at least a put of blood to the local fauna. At least, that's how it feels.

We have been spoiled with yet another extraordinary day! It started before dawn, heading out to the springs outside Crystal River to play with the manatees. These gentile giants are the epitome of cuddly. So adorable.
Then we drove 500 km south to Everglades City, attended an alligator feeding session and enjoyed an airboat tour through the mangroves, with wild alligators both here and there. To top it off we had a delicious dinner with fish, shellfish and, yes, alligator.
I must admit I am somewhat tired after such a day, but hey, i will remember it for many many days to come :-).

What a beautiful day! Blue sky, warm sun, curious squirrels and gin clear water. And oh yes, a fish eagle flew just a meter above my head then landed nearby. No wonder I spent more than four hours in the water at Devil's Eye (in the Ginnie Springs area), shooting more than 700 photos. Well, I won't bore you with all of those, but here is a small selection. Thanks to Jennie for modeling and patience.

Arrived to High Springs in Northern Florida this afternoon. Checked in to our motel room then headed for Ginnie Springs, a series of cracks in the earth where gin clear underwater rivers pour out into the Santa Fé river. Very cool, except that they are somewhat warm (20-22 °C).
Lots of people and a bit too late in the afternoon, but I got a few pics anyway.

In the evening we had a lovely dinner at Great Outdoors Restaurant – I had a Bison burger.

Early this morning (01.30 local time) we arrived to Miami after a very long journey. Due to American paranoia the immigration process in New York took ages which meant that we missed our connecting flight to Miami.

Instead we had to fly to Atlanta on a delayed flight, then run through the airport to catch a new plane to Miami. In the end it did work out and we could pick up the rental car and check in to our drab motel room after 22 hours of travelling.

A very short night of sleep, then a 3,5 hours drive north to Kennedy Space Center. I've been here before a long time ago, but need new digital photos. And I like this place – space, astronauts and rockets have an undeniable adventure potential. This time we took a guided tour into the closed military part called Cape Canaveral. This is where they did all the actual rocketeering, launching hundreds of satellites, manned missions and moon missions. While here, a huge Delta IV rocket was towed on the road and another Delta IV stood on a launch pad, ready to go. Exciting!

We also saw a lot of wildlife, including alligators, dolphins, bald eagle, armadillo and lots of birdlife. This is a very interesting area to visit and I highly recommend it if you are heading for Florida.

2011 - that was it

2011, a yearof strong emotions. Friendship and love but also sadness and loneliness.Hectic and fun, yet also hard.

It startedon a balcony in Cape Town, looking at the stars and the Table Mountain whilesipping on New Years-Champagne and brandy & coke together with my friendAnders a.k.a. Bonen. I was out on a world-spanning journey after moving fromAmsterdam and met up with Anders in Cape Town. The following days we freedived with seven-gilled sharks, cage-dived with great white sharks, visited vineyards with a vintage sidecar motorcycle and in general had lots of fun.

Later on,we travelled to Mozambique, checking out the nightlife in Maputo and the divingand beach-life in Tofo. Fun and very relaxing.

I returned to Cape Town and spent some more time there in February, then flew toSweden and decided that I once again should live in my hometown Malmö. Thiscoincided with me being offered the job as Editor-in-Chief at the Swedishdiving magazine DYK. I found myself a temporary flat while looking forsomething more permanent, and thoroughly enjoyed being back in Sweden withfriends and family close at hand.

March wasbusy with work, meetings in Copenhagen and Stockholm and a quick trip back toAmsterdam and Haarlem.

April endedup being a lovely month, starting with an assignment where I was forced to tryout all the best pizzerias in Naples, Italy, the hometown of pizzas. Delicious.From Naples I took the train north to Tuscany, picked up a beautiful Vespa andthen proceeded to drive around on the Tuscan countryside, visiting cutevillages, small vineyards and delicatessen shops. A long-standing dream come true.

Back inScandinavia for a great weekend in Copenhagen, then off again to Croatia andthe Kvarner islands, also a rather agreeable job.

Now we arewriting May and I had the great pleasure of going sailing in the Cyclades archipelago of Greece together with a bunch of Swedish and Dutch friends. Whenthey flew home I stayed on for another article, this time about the quaint andquiet island of Anafi. I like Greece, especially the islands, although I wasclose to overdosing on Greek salads and calamari.

Back inSweden I bought myself a car (named Brödrosten, the toaster, by a femalefriend). I would rather live without a car but need it for the diving and paragliding.And I have to admit it is handy, especially when you are moving and creating anew home from scratch.

The startof June came with a paragliding competition in Åre, Sweden where I managed tocome second, beating many of Sweden’s best pilots. OK, so it was only one heat,which means there is a certain element of luck, but anyway J. Idid this on a brand new glider, a Nova Mentor 2 (which is an EN B almost novicewing).

I had somemore meetings in Stockholm, then flew to Lisbon for a bit of work. In the endof June, the Nordic and Swedish Championships in paragliding was flown inNorthern Portugal, I was there and managed to win the class above my own!

1^stof July I drove from Portugal to central Spain to witness and write about theWorld Championships of paragliding in the little town of Piedrahita. Sadly thecompetition was stopped after only a few days due to two tragic fatal accidentsthe same day.

Back inSweden I repacked, this time for a week of diving on a dive cruise ship in theEgyptian Red Sea. This was also my debut as an underwater still photographer with my new professional equipment. Challenging but also lots of fun.

In the veryend of July I got the keys to my new and very own flat in Central Malmö! What arelief to have your own place again and to unpack your stuff after living in asuitcase for almost a year.

August, andI had lots of office-based work producing magazines, but managed to squeeze ina weekend in Madrid, writing a bunch of stories in the company of two oldfriends. To say that we thoroughly researched the nightlife is anunderstatement, but we also enjoyed several of the world-class art museums thiscity boasts with.

I alsoattended the Swedish Championships in underwater photography in Hamburgsund onthe Swedish West Coast, not as a competitor but as a jury member and to writeabout it. It was nice to be back in beautiful Bohuslän and to go diving inSweden again.

Septemberwas another office-based Month, but I did throw a big house-warming party withalmost 50 friends from six countries joining the fun. Having so many friendsclose by really touched me and confirmed that moving back to Malmö was theright thing to do.

In the endof September I flew down to Krakow to visit Polish friends and produce a shortstory. I really like this old city and was made very welcome by my localfriends.

Octoberstarts with a wonderful work-weekend in beautiful Pisa together with a friend.I passed through this little ancient Italian city on my way home from the Vespatrip and decided to go back later on. So I did.

Anotherwonderful trip was my pilgrimage to the beer-brewing trappist monasteries inBelgium and the Netherlands together with Swedish and Dutch friends. Thesemonasteries are very much alive and populated with Cistercian Monks, and truly beautifuland serene places. That the beer is divine goes without saying.

The rest ofthe autumn was rather tough emotionally, but I did visit Marseilles in the endof October (passing Brussels for lunch with a friend) and Berlin in the beginning of November. End of November saw me migratesouth to South Africa for three weeks of well-earned holiday, including twoweeks of paragliding. First a training camp then an international competition,where I won my class and the photo competition. I really needed this break andit did wonders for my well-being.

2011 showed me the value of friendship and family. I already new about the beauty – and pain – with love but life gave me a few extra lessons for free just in case. Still, I am a very fortunate man having health, security and freedom. It is important to remind yourself about that now and then.

Celebrating Christmas and New Year in Malmö, I end the year on an up note, having regained my usual happy-go-lucky composture. Now I look forward to a successful and exciting 2012!

Andwherever you are, and whatever you do, I wish you a peaceful year filled ofhappiness and sweetness. Take care of yourselves and the ones you love. And be gentle and kind to everyone else (or at least try your best).

First task in SA Winelands

We flew the first task in the paragliding competition SA Winelands today. The day started very weak but grew as time passed. Take off was at Pampoenfontein and start a 2 kilometer radius around Flyer's lodge in Porterville.
first waypoint was P36 (with an 8 kilometer radius) out on the flatlands West of the ridge, then we crossed over to Citrusdal, passing waypoint 23 in the village Citrusdal. Goal was in Constriction all the way up North in the valley.
Unfortunately, last goal was 16:00 which caught a lot of us still in the air, including me (10 kilometers short of goal). But I still flew almost 68 kilometers so very satisfied with the day.

Sun, wind and rain

Yesterdaywas a fine if very windy day. Therefore we launched early and tried to fly apractise task out over the flatlands. For once we had clouds whose shadowscreated the most fascinating patterns on the ground. Moments like this I can’timagine a more beautiful place to be – sailing from cloud to cloud hi up in thesky. It is true magic.

But magicseldom lasts and far too early I was standing on the ground. I have hardlyflown over flatlands before, I am much more accustomed to mountains and my skillsare, lets say, in their infancy. Nevertheless it was a great day.

Today thecompetition started. With it came the rain. Remember, it is summer down hereand we are in a very arid area that never sees rain in the summer. Well, hereit is raining like it was winter in southern Sweden. Or Brussels if you prefer.What happened with the weather in the world?

We try tostay positive. At least there is time to read a book and to update the blog.

Today I hadanother lovely morning walk, saying hello to the pigs and lambs. It’s so ruralhere, in a very positive way. Already early it was hot and weak winds – good forus paragliding pilots. And the weather did deliver – we got a wonderful flighttoday. Practising for the coming international competition, we set a task (kindof a heat in a paragliding competition) taking us over to the next valley,poetically named Citrusdal.

I didn’tmake it all the way to goal, but still flew 56 kilometers, landing just 12,5kilometers short. Considering I am the rookie in this elite group and alsoflying a safer but not so hot wing, I am happy with the result.

This time, I landed far out in the boonies, so no kids. But Magnus, who landed a kilometer or two further, was surrounded by curious and playful children.

Peace of Africa

I had apretty rough autumn, workwise and otherwise. Therefore I am delighted to findpeace during these three weeks of holiday in Africa. Sun, sleep, friends andparagliding does wonders for me.

I leftSweden 1 December and flew via Dubai. Having to spend more than eight hoursovernight at the airport waiting for the connecting flight to Cape Town, I tooka cab downtown. Very quiet and somewhat boring, but I didn’t see much.

Cape Townis one of my favourite cities, so it was nice to be back again. Just hangedaround for two days, enjoying the sun and the city while waiting for the otherSwedish paraglider pilots to arrive. Sunday lunch we picked up a rental car anddrove to Porterville, three-four hour drives North West of Cape Town. Here, weare nine Swedish pilots attending a one-week training camp to improve ourcompetition flying. The second week will partake in an Internationalparagliding competition.

Unfortunately,the weather hasn’t played ball. Arriving in sizzling 37°C heat Sunday afternoonwe had a short evening flight. Monday was too windy so we went wine tasting anddining (always a pleasure) at Fairview and Nederburg.

Tuesday wasflyable, just about, so we took off from Klipdas at Porterville and flew South.I landed at Saron after 29 kilometers, some of the other pilots made it intothe Tulbagh valley another 15 kilometers. What a lovely feeling to be in theair again! When I landed I was greeted by a whole bunch of little kids thatcame running from the nearest farm. Although they probably saw paraglidersbefore they were still big-eyed when I a descended soundlessy from the sky onlyto fold up my flying machine into a neat backpack and walk away. What awondrous sport this is.

Wednesdat was cold and windy so we drove towards Stellenbosch and had lunch at tasty 96Winery Road. The wines at Waterford and Dornier were disappointing butStellenzicht was a very positive surprise with an agreeable Chardonnay and somelovely Shiraz.

Yesterday Iwoke up early and took a refreshing walk out on the countryside. It is such abeautiful landscape here. Peaceful. Said hello to two kids on a bike and a fewpigs along the road.

Last weekend I spent in Berlin with a friend, doing research for a bunch of stories. I think we managed six or seven photo exhibitions and 17 (or so) bars and restaurants. Hard work.

The morning walk from the hotel down to the harbor takes me through the Arab neighborhood. This feels a lot more Cairo or Jerusalem than Marseille or Europe.

At lunch, I ventured out to MAC - the Museum for Contemporary Art. Very far away, and it didn't help that three out of four directions received by the bus drivers where in the very opposite direction.

Today I had a beautiful morning in Brussels. Met my dear friend Sara Ahnborg and her little baby Trixie. Had a cup of tea at St Gery, then a nice beer (Saison Cazaux) at Chez Moeder Lambic, followed by divine scallops at outdoor bar/restaruant Mer du Nord at Place St Catherine - my favourite.
Couldn't resist a gaufre as dessert.
Nice to be back in my old hometown.
In the afternoon I jumped anther plane and now I am in Marseille to attend a big underwater photo- and film festival.

Trappist pilgrimage 2011

A week ago, I drove down from Sweden with some friends for another pilgrimage to the Trappist monasteries, this time also visiting the seventh one, La Trappe in the Netherlands.

Swedish Championships in Underwater Photography 2011

This weekend I attended the Swedish Championships in Underwater Photography 2011. Not as a competitor but to write about it for the diving magazine I produce (www.dyk.net) and to meet the photographers. I was also part of the jury for the selection competition before this final, but had to decline to judge now since I was present and could see who took what photo.

Anyway, it all took place in Hamburgsund on the Swedish West Coast, and it was wonderful to be back in the archipelago. This is my favourite part of Sweden and I wish I could go there more often. Here is a bunch of photos from the weekend.

It's been rather quiet on my blog lately. That is due to my life being all but quiet lately. After the paragliding in Piedrahita, I had a great night out in Madrid, then went home to Sweden to unpack and sort out my new flat. I am really enjoying being back in Malmö and in my old neighborhood.

But I had precious little time there before heading South again, this time to the Red Sea for a week of diving onboard the diving vessel Tala run by friend Faisal and his company Red Sea Explorers.
My main purpose was to train my so far non-existent skills in underwater still photography. It went better than I could hope for but obviously there is a long way to go and much to learn.

Paragliding in Spain

Today I had a great day of paragliding in Piedrahita, Spain. We took off from Pena Negra and flew towards Avila. You have to negotiate a mountain pass which can be tricky but after that we got good height. I was actually up at more than 3700 meter above sea level (which left more than 2500 meter between me and the ground). At these kind of altitudes it is cold, especially for me today as I had forgotten my jacket...

After almost four hours in the air I landed just outside Avila. A lovely flight of 70 kilometers (via five points, 57 km straight line). Most of the time I flew with another Swede, Christian, and we also landed together. Then Lasse was kind enough to come and pick us up. Thanks!

In the evening it was time for the opening ceremony of the World Championships in paragliding. I was busy taking photos of the Swedish team, but also had some time for tapas :-).

In the end we had four days with tough competition paragliding during the Swedish Championships. I learned many things from the other more experienced pilots and we had lots of fun. It is such a special thing to fly like a bird from cloud to cloud at more than 3000 meters of altitude.

Yesterday we had the last task. I fought for more than four hours in fickle air to try to make it to the top of the podium in my class. And I made it! Here are some photos from the last flight and the prize-giving.

Paragliding in Portugal

Last few days I have been paragliding in Portugal with some Swedish flying friends, staying at Arnold & Marie at Paraglide Portugal. We are here to compete in the Nordic Open and Swedish Championships - all very exciting.

We started with a training task a nice day. I made it 44 km down the track, not too bad for a newbie like me. Saturday 25th of June was the first competition day, blessed with beautiful flying weather. We got an 83 kilometer long task - impossible for me but a nice challenge. Or so I thought. In the end I actually made it all the way to goal, first time ever for me! It took four and half hour and it was fun all the way. The flight ended up being a personal best in distance.

Had a slow morning, working in the hotelroom (and sleeping after the long fado night). In the afternoon I jumped on a train to Sintra, a hilly and beautiful place, but full of tourists. Had a leisurely evening in Lisbon with terraces and views, sometimes combined, sometimes not.
Now time to pack, off to Serra da Estrela tomorrow morning for the Swedish Championships and Nordic Open in paragliding.

Last few days I have been in Lisbon for some work. I really like this city, it is full of joy and charming alleys. Not to mention the bars and little restaurants.
Yesterday night I had a very special evening at a Fado place.The venue was an old tiled former chapel, smaller than my (admittingly large) living room. Two fantastic guitarists and all in all seven singers performed. Due to exhaustion I had to leave close to three o'clock, then they were still playing. Such a beautiful evening!

Right now I am walking through a forest on a little dirt road following a stream. The air is full of bird song, the sound of running water and the lovely scent of wild forest.
I am in Dalarna in Central Sweden, participating in the paragliding competition Sverige Cup. After taking off at Tallhed airstrip outside Orsa I flew towards Edsbyn, following the set track for the competition. At first I gained more than 1.100 meters of altitude and had the most fabulous view of Dalarna. This is forest countries, crisscrossed by creeks, rivers and lakes.
When reaching max altitude and running out of lift I headed for Edsbyn, 62 kilometers away. Unfortunately I didn't find any more thermals and after maybe seven kilometers I had to land in a clearing the lumberjacks left.
Packing the glider I marvelled at the scenery while texting the competition organisers that I was safely down. I didn't come far but it seems no-one else left the take off-area, at least at that time.
Now I am hiking towards the closest village, four kilometers away while carrying my 20 kg equipment. Life is full of adventures!

When me and Anders arrived to Hammars backar at 10:20, several pilots were already in the air. I let Anders take off first in case he needed help, but he was fine. Just when I was ready to launch as well the wind died and everybody landed, most of them on the beach.
Later on, both Anna and Anders tried to fly again but had to land on the beach at once. So no flying for me. But I still had a nice day, ground-handling my new wing and chatting with the other pilots.
